为了找寻离家的妈妈，Sal的爷爷奶奶决定带着她横穿美国东西部，开始了寻亲之旅。在旅途中，Sal也向我们讲起了她的好朋友Phoebe的故事。
Phoebe是一个想象力超凡的女孩，在她的世界里，任何天马行空的事对她来说都不会觉得奇怪。
在Phoebe 家的门口总会收到一些神秘的纸条, 上边的message 让人匪夷所思:
“Don’t judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins.
“moccasins”如图是印第安人穿的鹿皮靴。

某一天，Phoebe的妈妈也离开了家。Phoebe觉得妈妈是被绑架了，或者是被邻居杀害了埋在后院里......越来越多的稀奇古怪的想法使Phoebe行为有些失常，这令Sal难以忍受。但同样也是妈妈离家的Sal还是决定帮助Phoebe找回妈妈。故事结束的时候Phoebe 的妈妈回来， 但是带回来Phoebe 同母异父的哥哥。
Phoebe 的妈妈是一位全职妈妈，她是隐形的，为家庭付出的一切都不被家人感激， 没人在意， 完全失去了自我。 当知道自己有一个儿子的时候，她觉得自己是不完美的，无法面对自己的家人，所以决定用暂时离家的方式先去解决这一段关系，最后鼓起勇气带着Phoebe 的哥哥回来了。要不是妈妈离家出走的这段经历怕是Phoebe 没有办法了解妈妈在家里做的一切对她来说有多重要！
“Being a mother is like trying to hold a wolf by the ears,” Gram said. “If you have three or four—or more—children, you’re dancing on a hot griddle all the time. You don’t have time to think about anything else. And if you’ve only got one or two, it’s almost harder. You have room left over—empty spaces that you think you’ve got to fill up.”
当Sal 跟着爷爷奶奶在寻找妈妈的旅途中真正穿上了妈妈的“麂皮靴”， 看到了当时妈妈旅途中看到的风景， 回忆一起跟妈妈生活时的快乐时光，也想起了妈妈伤心的往事。 但是在路的尽头等得她的确是一个坏消息， 妈妈在途中遇到了车祸，车上仅有一个人幸存下来， 那就是Phoebe 的邻居， 传送message 的正是这位邻居的妈妈， 她看到一些有趣的报纸内容就剪下来， 放到Phoebe 的家门口。
其实环绕本书的主题是一句古老的印第安谚语：
“Don’t judge a man until you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins.
“别轻易评断别人，除非你曾穿着他的麂皮靴走过两个月亮"
Sal 的妈妈一直觉得自己没有Sal的爸爸完美，无论如何去努力。
“My mother was right when she said my father was good. He was always thinking of little things to cheer up someone else. This nearly drove my mother crazy because I think she wanted to keep up with him, but it was not her natural gift like it was with my father.”
最后这两个妈妈的共性就是都需要自己的空间， 自我肯定， 需要填满内心的那个empty space.
这个故事就是想告诉我们，不要轻易去判断被人的生活，除非你经历过别人经历的， 共同走过同一段journey。
